Australian Red Cedar
Australian red cedar is one of Australia’s most highly prized native timbers. It is renowned for being a beautiful timber to work with. This is because it is a relatively soft timber with a grain structure that is easy to dress and carve. It also polishes really well, as it has a natural lustre. It is light to dark tan in colour. Furniture makers hold the timber in the same regard as mahogany.
I like to use Australian red cedar in brooches and rings where I am carving complex shapes. It’s also quite light in weight, which means multiple components can be carved and assembled for brooches, without adding too much weight to the piece. It’s such a beautiful timber to work with.
