Tiger myrtle can have the most amazing pattern. Its pinkish-red hue is broken up with black stripes that resembled those of a Tiger. It’s a timber that my father and I used to love using in furniture, as the pattern is best expressed when used in larger pieces.
This amazing timber comes from Tasmania and the black striping is actually caused by fungus grows inside the tree. The trees can grow up to 40 m in height.
The intricately patterned pieces of myrtle I have used in jewellery were given to me by our timber supplier. While they were highly figured, they were too small for him to sell, and would have been burnt as waste.
