Pink ivory wood
Pink ivory wood has the most amazing colour. Its intense colour can vary from a pale pink to a deep pinkish red. Pink ivory comes from African and is a hardwood that is highly prized by Zulu chiefs in South Africa. The piece of timber I have was purchased by my father Greg Collins 20 years ago. We used it for intricate inlay work in fine furniture and objects. We used it so sparingly due to its rarity that I still have some of it to this day.
Recently I have been looking into whether I could grow the timber. I have found a number of people growing it in America but have yet to find a seed supplier in Australia. It is sometimes grown for its edible fruit.
I like to use it in very small pieces, to add a flash of colour and contrast to my jewellery. It’s amazing to see the timber come alive with a light coat of oil. It really brings out the natural beauty of the pink ivory wood.
