Emergence | Brooch

$1,590.00

This architectural brooch is part of a new body of work which explores the relationship between architecture and landscape. The tussle between built form and nature, as man strives to supplant its will.  These dynamic forces result in a landscape of complex geometries, an ever changing environment where the shadows of the past merge with the present.

This brooch is made from a large range of native Australian and exotic timbers and silver. It was exhibited in the Australia National Brooch Show.

Description

MATERIALS: Ebony, Australian Red Cedar, Pink Ivory Wood, Zebrano, Wenge, Black palm, Silver

Indian ebony is an incredibly dense hardwood which can vary in colour from dark brown to jet black. It is often used in musical instruments such as pianos,  guitars and other string instruments.

Australian red cedar is one of the most sort after native timbers for furniture and carving. The beautiful soft grain structure is similar to that of mahogany.

Pink ivory wood is highly prized by Zulu chiefs in South Africa for its vibrant colour. It also has an edible fruit.

Black palm has black circular veins which run vertically through the palm. When it is cut across these veins, it creates a beautiful leopard spotted pattern.

Zebrano or Zebra wood comes from West Africa and has an incredible stripped grain pattern.

Wenge is a dense, dark blown timber that is found in parts of Africa. It has quite an open grain structure which turns almost black when it is oiled.
